Learning in the flow of work

Most workplace learning happens while doing the job. Three habits make it deliberate.

About 8 minutes
Colleagues talking and giving each other feedback around a tablet

Practise the difficult part

Repeating what you already do well feels productive but teaches little. Pick the step you find hardest and practise that step on its own.

Ask for specific feedback

“Any feedback?” usually gets “Looks fine.” A specific question gets an answer you can use.

From a general request to a specific one

Any feedback on my report? Is the main conclusion clear from the first paragraph?
How did the meeting go?What is one thing I could do differently when I present the figures?
Is this right?Which step would you have done differently, and why?

Reflect for two minutes

Reflection turns an experience into something you can reuse. Three questions are enough.

  1. What?

What happened? Describe it in one or two sentences, without judging it.

  2. So what?

What did it show you? What worked, what did not, and why?

  3. Now what?

What will you do differently next time? Make it one specific action.

Next: apply it in a three-week scenarioStart the scenario
